Wii Update! USB Keyboard and more…
Posted on Wed, 10th October 2007 at 20:25 under WiiWhen I got home the Wii’s disc tray was glowing blue indicating that I had mail, which is good. It turned out to be another gift mail from Nintendo. Free USB keyboard support! I immediately downloaded the system update, plugged in a USB keyboard and typed a message to my brother. Fucking joy! Worked like a charm.
Except for the OK button. My keyboard doesn’t have an OK button, so to actually send a message, I have to use the Wiimote. Sigh.
So, minor obstacle aside (which I’m sure Nintendo will remedy with another system update or, more likely, their own Wii Keyboard), I rushed to the Internet Channel to see if that worked and was gutted to find that it didn’t.
I then went to the Shopping Channel to get the update to Everybody Votes Channel and noticed in the news that the Internet Channel has also been updated to support the USB keyboard and to support sending links via Wii messaging. Double fucking joy!! I immediately downloaded both updates.
You may have guessed by now that I’m writing this blog entry on the Wii with a USB keyboard. It’s not ideal but it’s workable. The main limitation is that I can’t use Tab, Space and Enter to navigate the links on a web page binding me to the Wiimote. Once into the on-screen keyboard, the USB one works just like I expect it too, mostly. I can’t use Shift and Ctrl with the cursor keys to select and skip like on general purpose computers and the two-line text entry area is a little limiting but these are minor issues. It’s a joy!
As if USB keyboard and link messaging weren’t enough, Nintendo are also giving out free condoms to all owners of bare Wiimotes. New Wiimotes will come with silicone gloves out of the factory and previous owners are not being left out.
Now, how to test this link messaging…
Hi Kevin!

I tidied the post on the Mac. Can’t quite switch over to full-time to the Wii yet.
