Linux and Beryl on the Mac Mini - blow your socks off!

My various computers over the years have had some pretty impressive graphic processing power that, for the most part, went unused after I stopped playing
Oh… my… this is exactly what I’ve been looking for. It is hard to explain, but now my workspace is mapped onto a cube, which I can spin around at will. Each face of the cube is a separate desktop on which I can run applications, whose windows are animated in a variety of ways; fade, wobble, slip and slide all over the place.

Shame on you Paul, a man who influenced me regarding his opinion on eye candy. You never did say why you stopped playing first person pro games. Is it because I kept beating you. Go on install one.

OK, you got me on the eyecandy, kinda.
Beryl does look great, and some of the effects it can produce are gratuitous , but I like it for more than just the looks. The cubic desktop feels right, the window switcher is the best I’ve seen, and… well… lots more.
I stopped playing FPS games mostly due to time constraints, and partly due to a mild distaste I developed for the genre. That said, I could be persuaded to install something Serious.
R.I.P? How did nobby taste?

Wow. Beryl kinda like an acid trip without the acid. Wouldn’t beryl sap graphic processing power while using other graphically intense software such as photoshop, or indeed anything ’serious’?
I’m waiting while someone bundles all three episodes of seriousness, then I’ll re-buy them. Where’s the mission packs croteam? and the 4th episode of serious… wonder when that will come.
Mild distaste for the genre? Pray explain sir.
I didn’t eat nobby, he didn’t come back to the farm in bits, he went elsewhere. I didn’t want him to go, but it is a working farm. I think he went in pet food being so old.

In comparison to your average FPS, I’d say Beryl is pretty light, and unless you have those crazy rain effects enabled, Beryl doesn’t do anything until you ask it to do something with the screen, so shouldn’t affect application performance much. I would avoid playing a 3D-heavy game in a window with Beryl active, but hey, that’s something to test. I wonder if Quake is still available for Linux…
Did Serious ever get an on-line multi-player mode?
As I explained earlier about the genre, we’re of similar opinion. Each individual must make their own mind about the difference between fantasy and reality. To my mind, the social benefit of FPS and other on-line gaming far outweigh their potential to corrupt the minds of the innocent. They’re good, clean fun and excellent exercise for eye-to-hand co-ordination, reflex problem solving, navigational skills, strategy and team co-operation. My mild distaste stems from my knowledge that nothing about people is ever 100% true all of the time for everyone. We’re just not that lucky. For sure, someone, somewhere, someday, has been or will be influenced by a computer game to commit some grievous act, and the more people who play them, the more likely it will become.
Shit happens. Like me not having time to dedicate to FPS games. I love them, I really do, but right now I have other priorities that ill afford me the 5 to 6 hours a day of practice that a good gamer needs.
I bet the cats and dogs loved nobby.
