Mac mini: Opening The Box

Step 1: Open The Box

The first step when setting up a new computer is to open the box.

The Mac mini comes in a compact white cardboard package that has a carry-handle. Slipping open the package reveals the first words; “Designed by Apple in California”. Okay, so if this is a disappointment, I know whom and where to blame!

The words are printed in white on a grey cardboard box that sits in the polystyrene filler - it’s the first thing you see, so obviously the first thing to pick up and examine.

Step 1½: Open The Next Box

Now, I believe the second step to setting up a new computer, after opening the box, should be to RTFM - read the free manual. This extra box presumably contains the manual. Let’s see…

The grey carboard box is marked on the back “Mac Mini Print & Media”. It unfolds to reveal a compact disc set (the first one is marked “Mac mini Mac OS X Install Disc 1” and has some technical instructions printed on it about how to do technical things with the Mac.

Underneath the compact disc package is a similarly-sized white book entitled “Mac mini User’s Guide”. Underneath the manual are some license agreements. No point in reading those, but I do want to read this manual.

Step 2: RTFM - Read The Free Manual

So I do.
