Hello, Mac mini!

What’s this then? It’s an Apple Mac mini - a compact white box, weighing under a kilogram, purporting to be a computer. It has a CD-like slot at the front and a number of sockets at the back.

Why do I want one? I don’t particularly, but I want to know if this is the kind of computer I can recommend my parents to use. I also need to know that the technologies I have been inventing for the last year are compatible with this oddity.

What are you going to do with it? I’m going to connect it to the TV and see if I can set it up using only the supplied remote control. If that fails, I’ll resort to plugging in a keyboard and mouse. Once set-up, I’m going to make sure it does the three big things well; communication, browsing and multimedia entertainment. Then I’m going to make that work reliably for multiple users. Then I’m going to lock it down to just that and use it for a while.

Finally, hopefully, at last, a real computer that I can make work out of the box like a games console and at a similar price. Maybe even a portable Unix workstation I can get along with for under £500.
