Still in Sheffield.
Spending as little as possible. A friend has generously allowed us to stay in his apartment until the end of September which provides free accomodation and broadband internet. A lovely music system too.
Finding a job. A little depressing. I’m following the obvious approach and looking for a .Net developer position since that’s my most recent experience. I’ve been using modern technology to find, apply for and discuss jobs. Finding and applying works fine as far as the website is concerned but so far only one irrelevant phonecall from an agent. Back to the old approach - using the phone. My CV also sucks and that can’t be helping matters.
Pocket PC and Smartphone development. I’m looking into this for a potential development project. Not doing too well so far. I’ve re-read enough of the documentation to remind myself that I simply don’t want to program the devices using Microsoft’s crooked C++ (which can only be fully understood when smoking crack) but have no other choice since most of the interesting components are inaccessible from .Net (at least to me). Additionally, I’ve had a bitch of a time getting the development toolkits to install on my laptop. I’ve got a nice O2 XDA IIs to play with but I can’t do squat right now. Radical measures being taken include flattening the laptop. Time-consuming but the benefit is that I begin from a known, clean and stable foundation rather than 4 years of accumulated digital chaos. User data in Windows is allowed to seep deeply into the filing system at various places making the process of backing up important stuff problematic. I wonder if it’s any better on Linux.
Socialising. Not much. Not enough really. Not quite in the mood.
Diving. None. Although I did get my dive computer wet. And we’ve been reviewing some of the PocketPC dive logging software we could find on the internet. None are perfect
which isn’t a surprise as there’s no single representative diver whose needs can be served. Some nice work though. Will probably blog the results of the review.
OK, time to flatten the laptop. It’s a bit old to be a temptress so a rename is in order.

Paul, my old boss said, before I left, that he might need a .net developer later this year. I have emailed to ask if this is still the case, without telling him why.
