Diary of a Divemaster-in-Training - Day 25
Posted on Wed, 8th June 2005 at 03:44 under Diving, DM TrainingAn interesting day of diving consisting of 3 out of the 5 Advanced Open Water course dives with English couple Mo and Claire. I was wearing my new wetsuit for the first time. It’s a Seapro full-length 3mm in black with a silvery chest patch and powder blue stitching. Fits like it was made for me. I love it.
First dive of the day was deep
which we made at Clement’s Reef. Getting to 30m around here generally requires the use of a shovel but we managed to make it to 27m. Markus, in his nice-but-evil way, had me take down a very positively buoyant 1.5l water bottle full of air to demonstrate the effects of pressure. At depth, I opened it up and blew some air into it so that it was back to normal shape. We attached it to the reference line for later. When we surfaced we retrieved the now highly pressurised water bottle. Then the trick - point it away from the boat and slowly unscrew the cap. BOOM! We almost sank a nearby boat as the cap shot away at high speed for about 100m. And that’s only 4 bars of pressure!
Second dive of the day was naturalist
which we made at the Edgell Patches. I’m very fond of this site but the surface current was pretty strong. A decent dive with quite a lot of diversity. We didn’t break the record of 44 species though. No whale shark either.
Final dive was the peak performance buoyancy
which we made at Mamutik. I love PPB - it is an excellent opportunity to show off expert buoyancy and movement skill by going through hoops underwater. We also demonstrated other neutral buoyancy tricks such as upside-down hovering and somersaults.
Markus and I started to do a buoyant buddy-breathing equipment exchange but I had to abort due to cramp in both my legs!
